BASEBALL IN LIVING COLOR:
The following presentation depicts the contents of the “Baseball in Living Color” trading card collection. It combines an interesting cross-section of Negro Leagues Baseball history with an up-close and personal introduction of Negro Leagues Baseball veterans whom we’ve come to know as our own NLB Living Legends. The content is captivating; interestingly fun and challenging. The purpose of this collection is to offer a curriculum within which we merely encourage students to further study topics as they relate to the Negro Leagues. In doing this, we believe we will collectively achieve a greater understanding of this great history.

Lesson plans for objective study can be drawn from bountiful topics of interest. A few examples of these topics or interests to might include; the need for a baseball league for men of color, organizing a competitive and profitable league, the business practices of team owners, the effects of oppression and segregation, the impact of economic hardships (Great Depression), the importance and significance of team work, the importance of faith, family and friends, the broken color barrier (Jackie Robinson), integrating the majors, and, in its final hour, the realization that, as the struggling league met its demise, it had successfully achieved its purpose. Simply seeking answers to who’s, what’s when’s, where’s and why’s, will challenge one to discover and hopefully understand the magnitude of this great history.
In many cases, a Negro League Veteran may be available to visit a classroom during the course of study (in person or via web cam) and offer firsthand experience and personal insight. As his story is told, the history will come to life. Our program offers a pure perspective presented by men that lived in and made there mark on these historical days. It is our desire to offer old and young alike an opportunity to open their hearts and their minds to embrace this amazing history.
